Prof. Sergey Y. Novikov |
The history of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics began in 1969. The founder of the faculty was a famous Russian mathematician, prof. Stepan P. Pulkin (1907-1980). Prof. Viktor M. Klimkin, honored worker of higher education of Russia, a well-known specialist in Functional Analysis, had been at the head of the faculty for 20 years. He was followed by prof. Vladimir I. Astafiev, a graduate of Moscow State University, who had been the dean of the faculty from 2000 till 2010.
The faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics has been following the traditions of the leading scientific schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Voronezh and Saratov State Universities. Today the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is a large scientific and research centre in the Volga region.
The Department employs experienced lecturers possessing candidate and doctorate degrees.

Students have an opportunity to work in eight scientific and research laboratories. Informatics classes are held in computer rooms equipped with modern information technologies and internet access. SSU scientific library gives access to full-text resources of the leading world publishing houses in the fields of mathematics and computer science.
The faculty regularly organizes Russian and International Mathematical Schools and Scientific Conferences in Algebra, Differential Equations, Mechanics, Mathematical Physics and Nanotechnologies where the leading scientists participate in (see, for example, ssu.archive.samsu.ru/lie2009, labmathphys.ssu.samara.ru/content/view/196/92 etc).
The faculty offers postgraduate study in six majors. The faculty maintains close scientific contacts with the Russian Academy of Sciences and leading national research centres. Besides the scientists of the faculty have their internship in Germany, China, Australia, Spain, Poland, Sweden, the USA and cooperate with their colleagues in mutual scientific programs.
The Department prepares highly qualified specialists in Mathematics, Mechanics, Mathematical Modeling, IT and Information Protection which are in great demand among regional, Russian and international companies and enterprises.
Degree programmes proposed at the faculty:
Bachelor of Mathematics
Bachelor of Applied Mathematics and Informatics
Bachelor of Mathematical Support and Information System Administration
Bachelor of Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling
Master of Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling
Mathematics
The graduates get fundamental mathematical training that helps them to become scientists and teachers, programmers and systems analysts. This allows them to work successfully in scientific-research institutes, universities, schools, in banking, economics and management. The students specialize in algebra, functional analysis, and differential equations.
Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling
The scientists of the department have worked out the unique courses on mechanics of solids, aeromechanics and hydromechanics, mechanical and computer modeling, nanotechnologies to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills required for engineering solutions development.
Master program «Solid Mechanics»
Applied Mathematics and Informatics
Students study new information technologies, programming languages, databases, expert systems, and methods of computer modeling in natural sciences and economics. Graduates of Applied Mathematics are prepared to work in scientific and research centres, public authorities, and organizations that apply methods of mathematics and IT in their work. The graduates can specialize in Computational Mathematics, Informatics and Business Problems Solving.
Mathematical Support and Information System Administration
The major was established in 2001. Students get acquainted with the structure of local networks, artificial intelligence systems and information systems administration. The students specialize in application software development.
Informational Security
The major equips students with the knowledge in modern mathematics and information systems security. In particular, they study coding theory and probability algorithm encryption, number-theoretical methods in cryptography, mathematical methods of the information protection, in addition to technological, economic and legal aspects of computer security.
The students can acquire additional qualification “Translator in English in the sphere of professional communication” and “Mathematician-economist”. The faculty has organized regular scientific seminars in commutative algebra, representation theory, algebraic geometry, etc. (see www.algeom.archive.samsu.ru/text/seminar.html). Senior students and post-graduate students often win regional and Russian scientific contests, participate in various conferences and get individual scholarships from the President of the Russian Federation and the Russian Government.
