The Faculty of Philology is one of the first in Samara State University. The formation of the university began with the History and Philology Department in 1918. After the revival of the university in 1969, the Faculty of Philology has been continuing its work being one of the basic and today it is one of the biggest in Samara State University. More than one thousand students are studying at the faculty. The highly qualified academic staff includes fourteen professors, doctors of philology and education, forty six associate professors, candidates of philology and education.

The Faculty of Philology of Samara State University has always complied with to the highest standards of classical education, being loyal to academic traditions and following up-to-date directions. The demands for informational, communicative and cultural competencies are constantly growing in different professional spheres.
The faculty train specialists within the classical University program, harmoniously combining linguistics and study of literature with the classical curriculum. With proficiency in the foreign language, students receive knowledge about the society and the culture of the country, whose language they learn and become experienced in the research work.
Students also have an opportunity to receive additional specializations free of charge:
Students are offered additional educational programs on commercial basis, such as: “Promotion and Publishing Activities”, “Interpreter in the sphere of Professional Communication”, “Italian Language”. After receiving these qualifications, students get a state standard diploma of additional education.
The Department of German Philology offers an opportunity to study at Goethe’s Institute Centre of German Language, which earns an international certificate.
The best students of the faculty receive personal scholarships from the President of Russian Federation; the Governor of Samara Region, P.V. Alabin’s Fund; the academic council of Samara State University; and the Oxford Russian Fund. Students are awarded medals by the Department of Education and Science of Russian Federation. Outstanding students of Foreign Philology (German Language and Literature) annually win scholarships offered by German Service of Academic Exchange for semester education in Germany, students and postgraduate students become the prize-winners of regional competitions and get research grants.
Our graduates successfully work as scientists, journalists, copywriters, advertising specialists, PR-specialists, editors, critics, interpreters, tutors, lecturers, teachers and in other fields.
